When Sony and Philips were having difficulties in making SACD (super audio cd) work, they turned to one man: Edwin Meitner who is often called Mr. Digital because of his mastery of the digital domain. He was the first to point out the deleterious effects of phase jitter on digital audio performance. It was not a surprise that he overcame the technological hurdles to make SACD/DSD recording and playback possible.

While SACD was not a successfully commercial format due to the price and unavailability of software; it is however undeniable that it is a significant improvement over red book CD; and DSD recording technology stimulated a big performance improvement from CD itself.
